Patan durbar square

The Patan Durbar Square is located in the heart of the Nepalese city of Lalitpur. It is one of Kathmandu's three Durbar Squares, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The historic royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur dwelt is one of its main attractions.

The royal square is credited to the Malla Kings of Lalitpur, and it is known that the location is a historic intersection. The Pradhanas, who resided around the Durbar Square before the Mallas, had ties to it. The Thakuri dynasty is said to have built a palace and made changes to the area, but there is little proof of this. Patan was undoubtedly a flourishing city in ancient times, according to scholars.

The most important temple in Patan Durbar Square is the Krishna Temple. It's a three-story structure built in Granthakuta, a local Shikhara style variation. The stone carvings above the first and second-floor pillars are particularly noteworthy. The Mahabharata is told through pillar carvings on the first floor, while visual sculptures from the Ramayana are found on the second story.

God Shiva is honored at the Vishwanath Temple. During the reign of Siddhi Narsingh Malla, it was constructed in 1627. The roof supports are carved with sensual iconography similar to that found in Shiva temples around India. The front gate of the temple is guarded by two stone elephants. The sculpture of a bull, Shiva's chariot, is located on the other side of the temple. Inside the temple, there is a stone linga.

Siddhi Narsingh Malla built the Taleju Temple in 1640, and following a fire, Srinivasa Malla renovated it in 1667. The Malla monarchs' personal deity was Taleju Bhawani. It's a five-story structure with three roofs. According to Gopala kings' chronicles from the 14th century, the Pradhanas built a Taleju shrine before the Mallas.

Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk, and Keshav Narayan Chowk are the palace's three principal courtyards. Aside from these courtyards, the complex contains remarkable temples, religious shrines, and historical sites, all of which are known for their fine carvings and stunning displays of ancient Newari architecture.
