Permits for Trekking in Nepal
Trekkers will require to acquire specific permits and cards to trek and enter specific areas in Nepal.
TIMS Card
Every trekker must obtain the TIMS card. TIMS or the Trekkers information Management System Card is mandatory for all trekkers regardless of any regions. TIMS card is necessary to ensure the safety and security of the trekker which helps track down the whereabouts of a trekker in case of emergency search and rescue situations. TIMS has been implemented jointly by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal. The provision of TIMS came into effect on January 1, 2008. Since then, the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) started recording trekkers’ details and began issuing TIMS Card to trekkers.
The TIMS card can be obtained individually from the Tourist Service Center, Bhrikutimandap, and Trekking Agencies’ Association Nepal (TAAN) Office in Maligaon. Also registered trekking companies can also assist you in obtaining the Card if you are travelling in a group. Here are the list of documents: required to obtain the TIMS card:
- Fees
- Copy of your passport
- Passport sized photographs
- Details of your trekking itinerary stating the region of you trek
The fees for TIMS cards are as follows:
Foreign Nationals (Individual/FIT): 2000 NPR per route per person
SAARC Nationals (Individual/FIT): 600 NPR per route per person
Park Entry Fees:
Park entry permit must be obtained to enter protected areas. Park entry fees may be paid at Tourist Service Center, Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, or at the entry points. Here are a list of park entry fees:

Restricted Areas trekking Permit:
Special trekking permit must be acquired from the Department of Immigration, Kalikasthan, Kathmandu, for trekking to areas that fall under the Restricted Zone. Here are a few things to be kept in mind after obtaining the special permits for the restricted areas:
- Trekking in any area or along any route except the specified area of route shall be deemed to be violation of law.
- The Trekking permit should be kept along with the trekker while trekking.
- The Trekking permit has to be shown to immigration employees or police on request
A trekking permit is a must to travel to controlled areas mentioned below. Permit, however, is issued only to groups. Individual trekkers will not be issued trekking permit.The details of the permit fees are as follows:
